Chakrata,
known for its serene environs and pollution free atmosphere,
is situated at a distance of 93 Kms from
dehradun at an elevation of about 7000 ft ( 2118 mts.)
It provides a fascinating landscape for trekkers and nature
lovers. Virgin forests on conifers, rhododendrones and
oaks best suited for long walks.
A
vast dense forest, dotted with attractive villages of
the jaunsari tribe, the area has the 10,000 ( 3084 mts
) high peak of Kharamba.
On
its northern slopes is situated Mundali 9000ft ( 2776mts)
where in the month of November to April, skiers can enjoy
skiing.
Situated on two hills, Chakrata and Kailana, the 170
year old town and quite hill station was created by British
Army
officers,
in the early seventies of 19th century. Col. Hume of 55 regiment
came here to explore the possibilities of converting the
area into a military cantonment.
As
for the wild life, there are mainly wild Fown, Panther and bear.
About one lakh tribals inhabit this area. They are descendents from
the arayn hoarders who invaded in the indus valley and broke off
from the parent organization
